Description

3D Rendering of a representation of a C60 Buckminster Fullerene based on modern quantum mechanical models of atomic and molecular structure. While doing cursory research for this drawing I was surprised to learn that the Buckminster Fullerene is just one of a family of fullerenes that includes spherical structures like this one as well as nanotubes. Fascinating stuff. I added color, which isn't really something that exists at the atomic and subatomic scales, for visual interest. I also made use of the notion that shared electrons can be depicted as hybrid orbitals around the atoms or molecules they orbit.

Pretty cool. I am not quite sure which surface you are trying to show though. Is this just for visual impact or do you want to show something more chemical? The electron density is much more smeared out but if you are a believer in SP3 orbitals I guess there may be something there. Personally I see hybrid orbitals as something of the past, basis functions are just arbitrary choices, electron density or molecular orbitalsare much less so.
