Fullerene Aglow

3D Rendering of a representation of a C₆₀ Buckminster Fullerene based on modern quantum mechanical models of atomic and molecular structure. While doing cursory research for this drawing I was surprised to learn that the Buckminster Fullerene is just one of a family of fullerenes that includes spherical structures like this one as well as nanotubes. Fascinating stuff. I added color, which isn't really something that exists at the atomic and subatomic scales, for visual interest. I also made use of the notion that shared electrons can be depicted as hybrid orbitals around the atoms or molecules they orbit.
